Ancient History Library is an independent digital catalogue dedicated to making significant historical and archaeological texts freely available to readers, students, and researchers. Our collection spans ancient worlds, civilizations, nations, peoples, anthropology, and the arts — offering a curated selection of public-domain works that illuminate the human past.

How to Use the Catalogue

Every book in our catalogue is presented in a standard ebook format (EPUB or PDF where enabled). You may browse by category or search by title, author, or subject. Each entry includes a description, publication details, and — where available — contextual reading notes that place the work in its original setting. These notes are written by our editorial team to help you understand the text's background, significance, and limitations.

Organisation and Categories

Our catalogue is organised into four main categories, each designed to guide you to relevant material:

• Greece — Primary sources and scholarly perspectives on ancient societies, from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Greece and Rome.
• Rome — Works covering the histories of specific nations, ethnic groups, and regions, including early medieval Europe and the Near East.
• Egypt Near East — Texts exploring the daily lives, customs, and material culture of past peoples, from prehistoric villages to classical cities.
• Ancient Civilizations — Writings on art, architecture, and visual culture, including archaeological reports and guides to museum collections.

Within each category, books are further labelled with series descriptors such as “A Reader’s Guide,” “Text and Context,” or “Background and Themes” to indicate the type of editorial framing provided. For example, A day in old Rome — Inside the Classic offers a narrative tour of Roman daily life, while A century of excavation in the land of the Pharaohs — Text and Context places archaeological findings in their scholarly setting.

Metadata and File Presentation

We review and standardise metadata for each title — including author, title, date of original publication, and source of the digital edition — to ensure reliable citation. Where possible, we include information about the edition used for digitisation. Files are presented as cleanly formatted ebooks; any illustrations, maps, or diagrams from the original are retained if they are part of the source material.

Contextual Reading Notes

Many entries include editorial notes that discuss the historical context, the author’s perspective, and the work’s reception over time. These notes are not exhaustive scholarly commentaries but are intended to help you read critically. For instance, a note on The North Americans of Antiquity may point out that its theories reflect nineteenth-century views now considered outdated.
